Suren Amirkhanyan is a professional flutist and music educator with more than 30 years of performing and teaching experience.

He holds a Master’s Degree in Flute Performance from the Belarusian State Academy of Music and a Bachelor’s Degree with Honours from the Armenian State Conservatory. He was awarded First Prize at the Armenian National Woodwinds Competition in 1986.

Throughout his career, Suren has performed internationally as a soloist, orchestral musician, and chamber musician, and has held principal positions with several professional orchestras in Armenia, Russia, and Jordan. Since moving to Canada, he has continued performing as a freelance flutist with ensembles throughout the Greater Toronto Area.

​

Teaching has always been an important part of his career. Suren has taught flute and other woodwind instruments at music schools and universities in Armenia, Russia, Jordan, and Canada. Several of his former students have gone on to become renowned flute soloists and hold positions with leading orchestras in Armenia.

His students range from complete beginners to advanced players preparing for RCM examinations, festivals, competitions, auditions, school music programs, youth ensembles, and university studies.

His teaching approach focuses on developing strong fundamentals in tone production, breathing, technique, articulation, sight-reading, musical expression, and performance skills, while adapting each lesson to the student’s age, level, learning style, and individual goals.

​

He currently serves as a Music Teacher and Band Director at a private high school in Toronto and teaches privately at his home studio, established in 2010 with his wife, pianist Lilit Papoyan.

Suren is a Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certified Teacher.
